What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis, also known as MS, is a neurological condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. In patients with MS, the immune system attacks the myelin sheath that surrounds nerve fibers. This causes communication issues between the brain and the rest of the body.

Signs of MS

Symptoms of MS can vary wildly from one patient to another depending on the severity of the disease and which nerves are affected. Some common signs of MS include:

  • Numbness or weakness on one side of the body
  • Tremors
  • Unsteady gait
  • Feeling electric-shock type sensations when moving the neck
  • Loss of vision in one eye
  • Blurry vision
  • Double vision
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Tingling
  • Slurred speech
  • Bowel and bladder dysfunction

What causes MS?

Multiple sclerosis is considered an autoimmune disease. Though science does not currently know exactly what causes it, certain risk factors increase the likelihood of a person developing MS.

These include:

  • Race – Caucasians are more likely to develop MS than other races.
  • Age – MS typically presents between the ages of 20 and 40.
  • Sex – Women are more likely to develop MS than men.
  • Climate – MS most often occurs in temperate climates, such as Canada, the northern United States, and Europe.
  • Family history – Having a parent or sibling with MS increases your risk of developing the disease.
  • Lack of Vitamin D – Low levels of Vitamin D and sunlight exposure may increase the risk of developing MS.
  • Having another autoimmune disease – Having one autoimmune disease increases your risk of developing MS.
  • Smoking – Smoking raises the likelihood of developing MS.

Living with MS

MS is a progressive disease that typically follows a pattern of relapse and remission. Over time, symptoms generally worsen overall, though there may be periods when the disease goes into remission and symptoms reduce or disappear for months or even years.
