Types of Headaches

There are many different types of headaches. At Premier Neurology, we help patients find relief from all types of headaches, from tension headaches to migraines and everything in between. Some of the types of headaches we treat include:

Tension headaches – Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. Tension headaches can range from mild to severe and are often described as feeling like a strong rubber band is wrapped around the head, causing pain in the head, scalp, and neck.

Cervicogenic headaches – Cervicogenic headaches are caused by tension or injury in the neck. CGHs usually occur only on one side of the head, neck, and face. Cervicogenic headaches often mimic the same symptoms of a migraine or tension headache.

Sinus headaches – Sinus headaches are caused by a build-up of pressure in the sinus cavities. Pain from sinus headaches is usually felt in the nose, cheekbones, and forehead, as that’s where the sinuses are located. Pain from sinus headaches is generally deep, constant, and increases when you move your head.

Cluster headaches – Cluster headaches come on quickly and are typically very painful, especially around the eye area. Patients who experience cluster headaches may even wake up in the night with sudden headache pain. Cluster headaches may come on repeatedly for weeks or months, sometimes seasonally.

Migraines – The most severe type of headache is a migraine. Migraines are intensely painful and are typically accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Visual disturbances such as seeing auras or flashes of light can also be part of a migraine headache.

Comprehensive Care for Migraines and Headaches

Premier Neurology takes a holistic approach to treating migraines and other headaches. Treatments we recommend for headache patients may include medications, lifestyle changes, and other cutting-edge headaches treatments. Some of the headache treatments we offer include:

Botox for Headaches – Botox has been used for more than 10 years to treat migraines and headaches. Botox for headaches works by temporarily blocking the nerves that are sending pain signals to the brain.

Occipital Nerve Blocks – In an occipital nerve block, anesthetic medication is injected into the region where the occipital nerve crosses the skull. This medication prevents the occipital nerve from sending pain signals to the brain and causing headaches.

Sphenocath Procedure – The Sphenopalatine Ganglion nerve bundle is located inside the nasal cavity, and it is a frequent source of migraine headaches. In a Sphenocath Procedure, a flexible catheter is placed inside the nasal cavity and delivers lidocaine to the SPG bundle, which blocks nerve signals and provides migraine relief.

Condition Management – Effective headache and migraine care is often a multi-faceted approach. We help all of our headache patients manage their condition with a full spectrum of holistic treatment options that may include working with a nutritionist or physical therapist, making lifestyle changes, and whatever else you may need to finally get your life back from debilitating headaches.
